Taking to Instagram on Friday, Jake shared three black and white images of himself singing into a microphone and wrote about the healing power of music.
“While I was away I reconnected with my love for music and the microphone,” he wrote.
“I challenged myself to sing more, louder, harder and higher then I ever have before.”
The former mental health charity CEO added: “This was therapy for me. I cried more than I ever have before in those 4 weeks and most of the time it was during a verse or chorus.
“I wrote possibly the hardest song I’ve ever written and one day I’ll share it with the world, when the time is ready.”
Fans were impressed with Jake’s musical talent.
“I didn’t know you sang..” one mused in the comments.
“That is so amazing, as someone who is also going through a recovery its so important to find a way to express yourself & music is such a beautiful personal way to do it,” wrote another.
“You can do anything you put your mind to and heart into,” a third penned.
This week Jake also announced that he was stepping back as CEO of his mental health charity for ex-football players, Outside the Locker Room.
“Six years ago, following the toughest period of my life, Outside the Locker Room (@otlr ) was born through a desire to help others struggling with their mental health…Over that time I put together a program to educate and support young people which has now been delivered to over 400 sporting clubs and schools across Australia…” he wrote.
“It’s been an opportunity which has allowed me to connect – and tell my story – to thousands of people, many who were struggling with their own challenges. It’s been a privilege I will be forever grateful for…Now, the time has come for OTLR to find new leadership, with fresh and exciting ideas to take it into the future…
Jake then thanked all of his and the charity’s supporters, remarking: “For me, it’s time to embark on my next chapter.”

Last week, Jake shared a video message after a month of social media silence and the shock news of his break up from girlfriend, Sophie Guidolin.
“Through no fault but my own the last 10 months have been extremely difficult. I made some choices in my life that have impacted me personally but also impacted people that I love and care about a lot as well. My mental health got to a point where I needed to step away and that’s what I did,” he said in the clip.
“One of the toughest things in life is to put your hand up and admit that you need help and I was fortunate enough to be able to come away to a place like this with the full support of my family and friends.”
