Once considered to be a power couple on this season of Married At First Sight, in recent weeks, Heidi Latcham and Mike Gunner’s marriage has been somewhat turbulent.
Tonight’s episode was a tough one for the fiesty pair who, after weeks of bickering, finally had a proper conversation about the state of their relationship, and whether or not they’re willing to try and make things work outside of the experiment.
While Mike was hoping they could sort through their differences with one simple conversation, Heidi said she wasn’t sure she could confidently write ‘stay’ at the next commitment ceremony.
“I have to think about where I am going to live, if I am going to move in with you, where I am going to get a job. This is my whole life,” she said, fighting back tears. “You see things how you see them and I experience them right there with you but see it completely different. We do not see the world the same and that’s why I am so worried that if we continue this after the experiment… it’s not a good recipe for the relationship,” she added.
Since Mike interrupted Heidi’s emotional confession on their very first date, the pair have butt heads over the way he treats her, with Heidi persistently claiming her husband is not only dismissive of her feelings but doesn’t treat her with the respect that deserves. Although Mike told the experts on Sunday night’s episode that he was willing to alter his behaviour in an attempt to salvage what’s remaining of their rocky relationship, tonight he was adamant that he’d done all he could to keep their spark alive.
“This is it. This is me. This is as good as it gets. I can only be myself,” he said, adding, “Is that good enough for you?”
Dodging the question and clearly unimpressed by his flippant response, Heidi went on to say, “I want us to have a life where we bring out the best in each other. We are not that nice to each other sometimes. We are both good people but I don’t know whether we bring out the best in each other.”
“We still don’t understand each other. I wish I knew what to do but I don’t,” she added.
At the end of the episode, Heidi all but confirms she’s done with Mike.
“I have lost hope. Even after that whole conversation on the boat, I still don’t know what to do. I am not settling for something that is good enough. I just can’t go, ‘oh, that will do.’ I am weighing up whether he is the right man for me.”
