Over four years since the couple announced their divorce, Miley Cyrus has opened up on the moment she decided to end her marriage with Liam Hemsworth.
While Cyrus entertained a 100,000-strong crowd at the 2019 Glastonbury Festival, the 30-year-old shared that her landmark performance marked more than just her comeback to the festival scene.
“The day of the show was the day that I decided that it was no longer going to work in my life to be in that relationship,” she shared.

“[The decision] just really came from a place of love first, because we’d been together for ten years, but also from a place of trauma and just trying to rebuild as quickly as we could.”
Cyrus also shared that her Glastonbury set also marked a turning point in the way she approaches her work in the industry.
“[Glastonbury] was another moment where the work, the performance, and the character came first, and I guess that’s why it’s now so important for me that that’s not the case and the human comes first.”
The couple announced their divorce two months later in August 2019 after one year of marriage.

Cyrus shared her candid reflection as part of her TikTok docu-series Used To Be Young, with the series covering the milestone moments of her life from her early days as Hannah Montanna up until the present day.
During the series, the singer also reflected on the early days of her relationship with Hemsworth and the story behind their first meeting.
“In 2008, I needed to do another feature film for Disney and I didn’t want it to be a part of Hannah Montanna. Once we had written the screenplay [for The Last Song], it was time to audition all the guys who would play Will, my boyfriend, in the movie and we had gotten it down from thousands to the final three, and Liam was a part of that final three.”

With the duo officially cast in the leading roles in Nicholas Sparks’ first teen love story, Cyrus and Hemsworth’s on-screen romance continued to blossom outside of the film’s production, with the couple debuting their relationship at The Last Song’s premiere in March 2010.
“I think one of the elements that made that movie feel so special was that it was watching two very young people fall in love with each other, which was happening in real-time and in real life,” said Cyrus.
“The chemistry was undeniable, and that was the beginning of a long 10-year relationship.”
