MKR: Amy and Della dish on Josh and his controversial comment

MKR contestants tell WHO all about Josh and his 'sl*t' comment

Brisbane construction lawyer Della Whearty thought she heard something amiss when ‘Seafood King’ Josh Meeuwissen was served his entrée at siblings Amy and Tyson Murr’s ultimate instant restaurant on the March 29 episode of My Kitchen Rules. “I wasn’t sure if he said, ‘Thanks a lot,’ or ‘Thanks, sl*t,'” Della tells WHO, “but I could see Amy was thinking, ‘What did he say?'”

Fans already thought that Josh, a deckhand from Broome, had dropped a derogatory word based on show promos, but their suspicions were confirmed during the episode. As Della explains, “Amy said to me afterwards she went back to the kitchen and said to Tyson, ‘Did Joshua just call me a slut?’ None of us reacted to it at the time and trust me, if I would have clearly heard that, he wouldn’t be sitting on that chair.”

In a confessional chat that aired last night, Josh, sitting with his wife Amy, says he made the comment only in jest. For her part, rival Amy tells WHO that in the moment, she did not have time to register if what he said was or wasn’t a joke. “I was so focused on what I needed to do in the kitchen,” she says. “I kind of pushed it aside, but I wasn’t going to let it slide. I definitely think there is a right and wrong and with Josh and it’s a continual education piece.”

The day after the ultimate instant restaurant, Amy, a human resources executive, took Josh away from the cameras for a one-on-one conversation. “I let Josh know that it’s never acceptable, it’s never going to be funny,” she says. “I actually said, ‘This is not going to look good for you if they decide to air it.'”

Following their talk, Josh offered Amy an apology that she considered sincere “and we moved on,” she says. “He thought making that comment was on par with me calling him the ‘Seafood King.’ He just used bad judgment and he realised that.”

Before that moment, Josh was shown exercising restraint at Valerie and Courtney’s ultimate instant restaurant, which aired March 28. “We could see that he was trying,” says Della. “That goes to show there is some acknowledgement that Josh knows within himself that he can be appropriate, which is good.”

Brisbane’s Amy says she remains friendly with the couple from Broom and has spoken to Josh and Amy often about topics unrelated to the show. “Amy and Josh are very much in love,” she says. “They are closer now than ever.”

Yet Amy doubts this is the last we will see of Josh being brash and unfiltered. “He’s a shit-stirrer,” Amy says. “It’s what he does and he does it very well, and I tried to tell all the other contestants to stop taking the bait!”

‘My Kitchen Rules’ airs Sundays at 7 PM and Mondays through Wednesdays at 7.30 PM on Channel 7.
