Australian TV legend Molly Meldrum has broken his silence after backlash erupted following his controversial on-stage appearance during Samuel Johnson’s gold Logie winning speech.
“I profusely apologise if I upset anyone,” Meldrum, 74, told NewsCorp.
“I’m so very proud of Sam. Everyone should be proud of him. His speech for his sister Connie was beautiful and his charity work is simply amazing.
“He’s gone through a lot lately. And if people had problems understanding what I was trying to say, well, that’s nothing new to me,” he said.
Despite mixed feelings about the former Countdown host interrupting Johnson’s speech, Johnson himself was not offended by it.
“It was awkward a bit, but it was vintage Molly. It was Molly doing Molly times 100,” the Molly actor told Carrie Bickmore on The Project on Monday night.
“He really tried to add to the moment… and acknowledge his relationship with my family. Underneath it all it was a really sweet act and I hope people understand that.”
