The third film in director M. Night Shyamalan’s Eastrail 177 trilogy, Glass follows 2000’s Unbreakable and Split from 2017, bringing together characters and story strands from both.

Likely more enjoyable if you have seen those previous movies, Glass is easy enough to follow without prior knowledge of Unbreakable’s David Dunn (Bruce Willis), the lone survivor of a horrific train crash who has superhuman abilities; Elijah Price (Samuel L. Jackson), that same film’s villain; or Kevin Crumb (James McAvoy), a man suffering from dissociative identity disorder at the centre of Split.

The three are brought together at a mental hospital by psychiatrist Dr Ellie Staple (Sarah Paulson) with the aim of treating them for delusions of being actual superheroes. Each of their conditions, she states, can be rationally explained.

Being a Shyamalan movie, there is a sting in the tail after the lengthy set-up, which features McAvoy giving another terrific turn as multiple distinct identities. As always, however, the question has to be asked: is the twist worth the build-up? (Out now) 3 stars
