Despite having previously shut down talk of a reboot, the film’s creator Robert Zemeckis has recently revealed on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that he would be eager to revive the film’s musical adaptation on the big screen.

“I would like to do Back to the Future: The Musical… Just like [Mel Brooks] did with The Producers. I would love to do that. I think it would be great,” he shared, later adding that he had “floated that out to the folks at Universal, but they don’t get it, so there’s nothing I can do.”

“I don’t think it needs rebooting because are you going to clarify something? You’re going to find a better way to tell the story? I doubt it,” he told Variety.

Speaking on a potential return to the franchise, Christopher Lloyd, who portrays Dr Emmett Brown, shared that despite embracing the thought of a potential fourth film, the story would need to be bigger and better than the original trilogy.

“I would love to do a sequel, but I think Bob Zemeckis and Spielberg felt that they told the story in three episodes, but if somebody has a brilliant idea that would justify a fourth film, it might happen.” he told Variety.
