In news that will excite every Princess Diaries fan, the beloved film series is coming back for a third film.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Disney is in the works to create a third film which will be a continuation of the original series and not just a reboot.
Aadrita Mukerji is reportedly penning the script and Debra Martin Chase, who produced both of the Princess Diaries films, is also reportedly on board for the new project.
Anne Hathaway is set to reprise her role of Mia Thermopolis, but at this stage, there’s been no word on whether Queen Clarisse AKA Julie Andrews will reprise her role in the iconic film series.
The first two films, which were based on the novels by Meg Cabot, became instant box office hits when they were released in 2001 and 2004 and became icons of 2000s pop culture
Rumours of the series revival are nothing new, with the third Princess Diaries being subject to news headlines and chatter since 2015.
Here’s everything we know about the new Princess Diaries film!
Is Anne Hathaway returning?
It’s our lucky day! Mia Thermopolis is returning to Genovia one more time, as Anne Hathaway takes to TikTok to confirm her involvement in the upcoming film.
It’s not a *complete* surprise for fans of the iconic franchise – the actress has long expressed support for the reboot.
During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live in 2019, Anne Hathaway added fire to the rumours telling audiences, “There is a script for the third movie… I want to do it. Julie [Andrews] wants to do it. Debra Martin Chase, our producer, wants to do it. We all really want it to happen. It’s just we don’t want to unless it’s perfect because we love it just as much as you guys love it. It’s as important to us as it is to you, and we don’t want to deliver anything until it’s ready, but we’re working on it so…”
Is Julie Andrews returning?
Julie Andrews has also expressed her support for a third film – although at this stage she has not confirmed if she will reprise her role.
“I heard that there might be one,” she said back in 2020 when asked if there was a script.
“It’s long been talked about but nothing sort of been on my desk or anything like that. I think I would [do it]. I’m getting awfully old and crotchety. I’m not sure if it’s the right timing, but I think to work with Annie would be lovely again, and sure I’d be up for it. I think we should wait for — if a script comes in, let’s wait for that. Of course, we wouldn’t have the wonderful Garry Marshall who was the director. He’s passed. And he was really the nuts and bolts of it all.”
However, in 2022, Andrews expressed that she felt “too old” to participate in the third film.
“I think it would be too late to do it now. There was talk of a sequel many, many years ago,” she told The Hollywood Reporter.
“But I don’t think it ever came to pass. And Garry then did leave us. [For] especially me, it’s too far down the line now to go back to it. It’s a lovely thought, but I don’t think it would probably be possible.”
Following news of the potential reboot, Julie Andrews revealed if she would be reprising her role as Queen Clarisse Renaldi during an interview with Access Hollywood.
“I think we know that it’s probably not going to be possible,” Andrews, 87, said. “It was talked about very shortly after [the second sequel] came out, but it’s now how many years since then? And I am that much older and Annie the princess, or queen, is so much older. And I am not sure where it would float or run.”
Is Chris Pine returning?
The people want to know! And now, Chris Pine has revealed he would be happy to appear in a future Princess Diaries movie – although it’s yet to be confirmed.
“Yeah, I’m here! I’m here for it,” he told Entertainment Tonight during the Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves premiere in Los Angeles.
However, the actor, who played Nicholas Devereaux in the Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, had one request. A different haircut!
Chris told ET that he would choose a “low-profile hair helmet,” if he did reprise his role, over the longer locks he originally sported.
When will Princess Diaries 3 be released?
