While Oscar-winner Anne Hathaway is proud that her resume includes a slew of family-friendly films, the new mum admits she didn’t plan it that way.
“I’m proud that my body of work includes stories that allow families to experience that together,” she told reporters during a press conference for her latest film, Alice Through the Looking Glass. “I can’t say that I’m going to continue to make them because I have a child now, I just will continue to hopefully make them because I respond to them and seek challenges as an actress.”
The The Princess Diaries actress admitted that one challenge she is seeking out is a role in a Tarantino movie. “I’ve always wanted to be in a Quentin Tarantino film,” she said. “I really, I love the way he sees women. I think there’s definitely room for that in the world, and I would love to be one of his heroines.”
In praising Disney’s progressive approach to the Alice story adaptations, which reflect more modern sensibilities toward women, Hathaway went on to encourage the media to revise their increasingly outdated notions about female roles in society, including stopping the narrative that “women lose power as they get older.”
“I don’t feel it’s happening as I get older, you know?” she said. “I don’t feel that. I’m becoming way more powerful as I get older, and I’m tired of myself feeling the opposite, and ‘I’m not going to do it,’ and ‘I can’t do it alone.’ It’s going to take everybody…to stop using that language and take the narrative back the way Alice does.”
Hathaway revealed that she appreciates the way her own family encouraged her to achieve, by sidestepping notions of gender advantages or limitations.
“My parents were very smart,” she explained. “”They never said ‘You can do anything because you’re a girl’ – they just said, ‘You can do anything.’ They said the same thing to my brothers, and I believed them because I loved them and I trusted them.
“As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned what the challenges are, and I’m going with them,” she continued. “But I’m really happy that my parents gave me that initial, beautiful gust of wind to kind of take off with.”
