Lisa Barlow’s tagline on The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City this season is “I’m on a mission to serve Lisa, and I love that for myself.” And she meant it. She has been front and centre this season, with feuds, friendships and pricey jewellery all becoming major plot-points for the Queen of Sundance.
We caught up with Lisa so that she could spill the tea, or rather, spill the diet coke, on this season of The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City.
“I think overall this has been one of our best seasons, it’s probably our best ever I would say,” Lisa tells WHO. “Once you think that you know what’s happening, what actually happens is a total 180 from it. It’s literally the craziest season but it’s also shocking. It blows your mind.”
When asked if it’s more mind-blowing than the FBI showing up to arrest Jen Shah, Lisa says “in a different way yes.” Consider us intrigued.
More than half-way through the season, we’ve enjoyed a Meredith Marks meltdown in Palm Springs, a drama-filled Easter with Monica Garcia and her mother, a feud between Meredith and Angie Katsanevas, and we’ve even seen some serious friendship-building between Lisa and Heather Gay. Who’d have thought?
Of course, Lisa’s tense relationship with Monica has been one of the main plot points this season. Things kicked off on the way to Palm Springs, when Lisa lost her sentimental – and pricey – $60,000 ring.
“I mean, the ring was expensive so obviously I was upset that I lost it,” Lisa tells WHO. “I found out it was not insured, so it’s a loss. I did get a new one, John bought me a new one.
“But it was interesting that [Monica] was so upset about her circumstances that she expected me to like… I mean, I would have been crucified either way right? If I didn’t care they’d be like ‘she’s like oh it’s only 60 grand, whatever’ but because I did care it was a problem.”
Lisa continues of the squabble, “what I don’t like about what Monica was doing is, her circumstances aren’t the same as mine and I’ve never judged her circumstances, so I don’t know why she was so committed to judging mine. That was a little weird for me, I don’t know why she was upset about this.”
Of the entire Palm Springs vacation, Mary Cosby said “all these women do is fight and they’re not even good at it.” A quote that leaves Lisa giggling.
“I mean it’s typical Housewives, it’s ridiculous. Someone’s upset that I lost my ring, someone’s saying other rings have cobwebs on them, it just feels like totally sophomoric,” she says. “But I think it feels better to have these kind of fights than it is to have those destructive fights, which we’ve had in the past.”
Speaking of the past, Lisa’s infamous hot-mic moment has been put to bed this season as she buries the hatchet with Meredith. But seeing how Meredith handled things with Angie left Lisa feeling sceptical.
“For me, I’ve seen [this behaviour] since season one. For me it was very alarming to have her basically remove my name and insert Angie’s name. Like ‘do you want me to talk about her family, and her business,'” Lisa says, doing her best Meredith Marks impression.
“And so for me I’m like we’re working on a new friendship, the friendship we had for years is gone. At the start of this season it had been almost two years since we had even had solid conversation.
“So for me, it was a little alarming because I’m like… this doesn’t work anymore. Trying to discredit someone… it did make me feel like I needed to pump the breaks. I don’t want to go backwards with Meredith, we’re working on building a new friendship, but this is making me want to back away a little bit.”
However, in Episode 12 of RHOSLC it seemed that tension was brewing once again when Meredith and Lisa discussed the drama with Monica. Time will tell how things go when the ladies head to Bermuda.
The icy relationship between two RHOSLC stars finally thawed this season, with Heather and Lisa having some heart-to-hearts throughout the season.
Their only sticking point was when Heather had opinions on Lisa’s son, Jack, deciding to go on a mission for their Mormon church. But in the end, they resolved their issues.
“It was weird to [Heather] have such a strong opinion about my child’s choice for his future. I understand that Heather is on a different path than I am, what she wants to leave is [different] to the faith that I am practicing. Her experiences are not even… they don’t exist for me,” Lisa says.
“I think Heather and I have a really unique season. I think Heather always has an idea about what I think of her and she has an idea of me and how I should be doing things, and I’ve never once commented on how Heather should or should not practice her faith. I’ve never had a strong opinion about her leaving, so I think you’ll see us work through a lot of that, where we’ve never done that before.”
