Usually, we are focused on which Married at First Sight Australia couples are still together. But when it comes to Lauren and Jonathan, it’s all about the journey.

Thanks to a sneaky spoiler early in the season, we already know the couple are no longer together, but we still have loads of questions.

With rumours surrounding Jonathan and his new relationship with fellow MAFS contestant Ellie, we’re looking back at his journey on the experimental dating show and his (short-lived) marriage to Lauren, which is currently playing out on screens across Australia.

Even without a future cheating scandal to rock the pair, Lauren and Jonathan’s relationship was never the smoothest.

Lauren, a 32-year-old PR and marketing consultant from Western Australia was looking for a partner who could match her energy and whilst Jonathan definitely ticks the boxes on her list – their energy isn’t quite the same.

Despite a late arrival from the bride herself, Lauren and Jonathan’s wedding day went off without a hitch – it was cute, it was nice.

Whilst nice could be the word that best describes their relationship, Lauren would rather label it “boring.”

Although Jonathan is everything she wants on paper, she quickly realised the spark isn’t there.

He’s nice – but in her eyes, that’s not enough. She’s missing the banter, the tension, the energy.

Lauren spoke with The Kyle and Jackie O Show early on in the season, hinting towards the fact the couple were no longer together.

Speaking with the hosts, she revealed her new husband was “too nice” during the Honeymoon and they were missing “something” in their relationship.

“On paper, the experts got it right, he’s everything I want, however, there’s something on paper that you can’t put into words.”

Shortly after her interview, news broke of Jonathan and Ellie’s new relationship. At this stage, neither the pair, nor Nine, have commented on the news, and fans were shocked to watch the cheating scandal emerge during the last commitment ceremony of the season.

During Feedback Week, Lauren revealed an unexpected medical issue would see her return to Perth for a week.

Explaining she had a blood clot in her shoulder that would need removal via surgery, she admitted she was upset to be leaving when she and Jonathan were “getting along really well.”

Following the successful surgery, Jonathan joined Lauren in Perth as the couple enjoyed the home-stay week – but their marital bliss was destroyed when Tori revealed Jonathan was in contact with Ellie.

Despite arguing that the texts were innocent and he was in contact with a number of ex-contestants, not just Ellie, Lauren was blindsided by the accusations.

After learning Ellie reached out on average every three to four days, Lauren admitted her gut feeling was that there was more to the situation.

“I find it strange” she explained. “What the actual f***k…I feel like I’ve been lied to. I feel so stupid,” she added, as she broke down in tears and revealed the triggered memories of past relationships.

With the experts and group all agreeing the behaviour was wrong, it didn’t come as a surprise when their relationship crashed and burned during final vows.

“I don’t feel like you ever respected me,” Jonathan explained in his speech, “however I kept trying because I was hopeful.”

“You pretended the messages between me and Ellie were flirty, they were not. Seeing you willing to lie to make me look bad astonished me and by lying to the whole group to make me look bad, you showed you weren’t willing to support me – and it makes me deeply upset. This is when I knew you weren’t the person for me.”

“Great thanks for sharing,” Lauren replied, before launching into her own prepared statement.

“Instead of taking accountability at the final dinner party, you chose to try and flip the script on me…although you completely wasted my time in terms of finding a romantic partner, you taught me I should always trust my gut. Jono, I don’t see a future with you.”

“And no it’s not me, it’s you,” she added before walking off.
