The potential for slime is high for Australia Zoo conservationists Robert and Bindi Irwin — the siblings are in the mix for Favourite Duo at the 2018 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards, hosted by WWE star John Cena. “We were so happy hear about the nomination,” says Robert, 14, “and are thrilled to part of this fantastic show.” Adds Bindi, 19, “above all else, we’re a team.”
Since Kids’ Choice is all about pop culture, WHO learnt a little bit more about the Irwins’ preferences.
Q: Who is your favourite duo and why?
Bindi: Our parents. Since I can remember, Mum and Dad always told me the meaning of life is unconditional love and that is exactly what they shared. They will forever be my favourite duo.
Robert: Not only did they reach hundreds of millions of people worldwide to spread the message of wildlife conservation through documentaries, but also built the zoo into what it is today. They started our wildlife hospital and non-profit charity Wildlife Warriors to help animals through conservation projects all over the world. Bindi and I are so proud to be continuing their amazing work.
Q: Who are your favourite actors and actresses? Do you share the same tastes?
Bindi: Beau Bridges! I have admired Beau my entire life. I was fortunate enough to film Free Willy: Escape from Pirates Cove with him in South Africa. When I was 10 years old, he gave me the book “Acting: The First Six Lessons” and encouraged me to follow my dreams no matter what. Also Olivia Newton-John. I am inspired by Olivia’s passion and courage towards causes so close to her heart.
Robert: A few people in particular would include Russell Crowe, who has been a friend of ours for many years and has supported our conservation work, including helping to protect the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve in northern Queensland from being strip-mined. We have also known Magda Szubanski for a long time and we admire her recent work with marriage equality in Australia.
Do you binge-watch TV series and if so, what’s in your streaming queue now?
Bindi: When I am not outside running around with our beautiful animals, my favourite series include Will & Grace, Parks & Recreation, and The Office.
Robert: For us, there is never a typical day and we are always travelling or working with our gorgeous animals at Australia Zoo, so we rarely get time to watch a lot of TV. When we do, I really enjoy wildlife documentaries and when we are in the US we often enjoy Modern Family. I also love binge watching the old Jurassic Park movies as well!
Do you play video games and if so, which ones are you best at? Who is more competitive between you both?
Bindi: I actually just downloaded Mario Run onto my phone and am secretly addicted during long car rides.
Robert: While video games aren’t my passion, I do enjoy a bit of Monopoly and it can get quite intense. When my family and I play a game, I am certainly the most competitive and usually end up winning!
The 2018 Kids’ Choice Awards airs Monday, March 26 at 5 PM on Nickelodeon.
