Melbourne-born Shanina Shaik may be a natural beauty, but her powerhouse, supermodel career hasn’t been built on looks and six-inch heels alone.
“Growing up, I was a tomboy,” Shaik says at the cover shoot for WHO’s annual Glamour Issue. “Modelling was a hobby to me and something I enjoyed, dressing up and putting makeup on. But learning about myself as I age goes further — I understand fashion a lot more and I know my body type. And being on set, I’m learning from stylists how to mix and match, what colours work with each other.”
All that education has culminated in Shaik’s new assessment of her style and attitude.
“I was a tomboy at first and I became a girly girl,” she says. “It was fun for me and I obtained this confidence, and it’s shone through.”
While the Victoria’s Secret Angel describes her current favourite off-duty outfits as “hippie, bohemian dresses, and off-the-shoulder tops with a cute pair of jeans or shorts in the summertime, and a cool T-shirt, biker jacket, jeans and boots in winter,” she vows to turn it up for her upcoming wedding to DJ Ruckus [Greg Andrews].
“On your wedding day, you want to have that moment of wearing something you’ve never been in,” Shaik says. “For models, it’s different because our job is to wear beautiful gowns or go to events in beautiful dresses, so we want something different.”
So what will her wedding look be? Shaik smiles. “I think what everyone will see after the wedding is that it’s my own style,” she says. “It will be very me.”
