Revered Bollywood actor, Irrfan Khan, has passed away after a prolonged and arduous battle with cancer.

The 53-year-old’s death was confirmed by a spokesperson just days after he was admitted to the intensive care unit of Mumbai’s Kokilaben hospital with a colon infection.
“It’s saddening that this day, we have to bring forward the news of him passing away,” the statement read. “Irrfan was a strong soul, someone who fought till the very end and always inspired everyone who came close to him.”
While the star was deeply private and lived a low key life away from the spotlight, news of his death sent India into mourning, with politicians, actors and fans expressing their condolences on social media.
Indian prime minister Narendra Modi said that his demise was “a loss to the world of cinema and theatre. He will be remembered for his versatile performances across different mediums. My thoughts are with his family, friends and admirers. May his soul rest in peace.”
Fellow Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan also expressed his sadness, saying his untimely death felt like a “huge vacuum”.
“An incredible talent, a gracious colleague, a prolific contributor to the world of cinema. Left us too soon,” he tweeted.
Nick Jonas’s wife, Priyanka Chopra— who starred alongside Khan in 7 Khoon Maaf— also paid tribute to the Jurassic Park star in an emotional Tweet which included a photo of the pair on set
“The charisma you brought to everything you did was pure magic. Your talent forged the way for so many in so many avenues.. You inspired so many of us. #IrrfanKhan you will truly be missed. Condolences to the family.”
In 2018, Khan’s health began to deteriorate when he was diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumour. He opened up about his medicinal condition in a heartfelt tweet, writing:
“The unexpected makes us grow, which is what the past few days have been about. Learning that I have been diagnosed as of now has been admittedly difficult, but the love and strength of those around me and that I have found within me has brought me to a place of hope. I request everyone to continue sending their wishes.”
After extensive treatment in the U.K., he recovered well and began shooting his new film, Angrezi Medium. Unfortunately, production was cut short by the coronavirus pandemic.
Khan— who studied at the elite National School of Drama— was best known for playing the police inspector in Slumdog Millionaire and for his roles in Jurassic World and Life of Pi. He also had great success in Hollywood with The Amazing Spider-Man, The Namesake and Inferno. In the Hindi film industry, he was known for a handful of parts in song-and-dance blockbusters.
The beloved star is survived by his wife Sutapa and sons Babil and Ayan.
