Throughout the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, 20-year-old Mary Fowler has been an instrumental part of the Matildas squad.

From her humble beginnings as a junior football player in Cairns, Fowler has played her way to some of football’s most prestigious teams; recently signing a four-year contract with Manchester City.

Fortunately for Fowler, her transition to the European football league was not one that she made alone, with her two brothers, Quivi and Seamus, also making the move to Montpellier, France to support their sister.

As the Matildas star prepares for her next Women’s World Cup match, we take a closer look at Mary Fowler’s family.

Who are Mary Fowler’s parents?

Mary Fowler is the second-youngest child of Kevin and Nido Fowler.

Originally from Ireland, Mary’s father Kevin travelled through Papua New Guinea as a backpacker before securing a position as an aid worker for the Irish government.

It was in Papua New Guinea that Kevin met Mary’s mother Nido, with the couple reportedly meeting after being set up on a blind date by a mutual friend.

Following their wedding, the couple moved to Ireland before emigrating to Australia, with the Fowler family establishing their home in Cairns.

Throughout the Women’s World Cup, Nido’s home village of Kira Kira, located in the Papua New Guinean capital of Port Moresby, has rallied behind Mary Fowler and the Matildas, with the town sporting a number of decorative banners dedicated to their homegrown football star.

“It’s so special to see how much they support me and how much they believe in me and look up to me… I would love to be able to connect with my mum’s roots a lot more and spend time with her family over there as well,” Fowler told The Sydney Morning Herald.
