The first season of Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone spin-off, 1923, had all the ingredients for an epic Western series, and fans have been waiting (im)patiently for the next chapter of the Dutton family’s origin story.
The Hollywood writers’ strikes delayed the filming of Season 2, but it’s finally set to premiere on Paramount+ on February 23. And the storyline looks just as intriguing as its debut season, with Dutton family patriarch Jacob and his wife Cara continuing their battle to keep their beloved ranch out of the hands of greedy miners and property developers.
Their globe-trotting son Spencer is making the seemingly never-ending journey back to Montana to help the family, but in the meantime, the villainous Donald Whitfield is still threatening to destroy all they’ve worked so hard for.
As we get ready to check back in with Montana’s first family, we take a look at the cast and characters that make up the world of 1923…
Harrison Ford as Jacob Dutton
Back in his role as lead character Jacob, Harrison says there’s “a long way to go” to save the family ranch for the future generations.
“There’s a storm a-coming and we know it,” Harrison tells People of the challenges the family will face in the new season, from harsh weather conditions to ongoing attempts to take their cherished land. “There’s nature and mankind. And if nature won’t get ya…”
Sadly, season two will mark the end of the 1923 chapter, but Harrison promises it’s a memorable one that’s been worth the wait.
“It’s a treasure for an actor to read this kind of stuff,” he says of the script.
Helen Mirren as Cara Dutton
Helen, whose riveting to watch as Jacob’s fierce and loyal wife Cara, says season two will see the family up against a “particularly awful winter” that will push them all to the “edge”.
As the one who manages the day-to-day operations of the Dutton ranch, Cara has just as much to lose as her husband – and she’s not about to give up without a fight.
Brandon Sklenar as Spencer Dutton
Making his long journey home to Montana after an eventful season one, war veteran Spencer (played by It End’s With Us Brandon Sklenar) is expected to do all he can to help his adoptive parents Jacob and Cara hold onto their family fortune.
Spencer’s dealing with his own heartache after being separated from his wife Alexandra, though she’s determined to make her way back to him…
Julia Schlaepfer as Alexandra Dutton
The British socialite fell in love with Spencer in Namibia and abruptly left her existing fiancé, and in season two, Alexandra is risking it all again to find her way back to her love.
Julia Schlaepfer warns fans there’s a “very, very emotional” season ahead. “Taylor [Sheridan] sent me the scripts and I was weeping,” the actress says.
Darren Mann as Jack Dutton
The third-generation Dutton is John Dutton Sr’s son, and an ambitious rancher set to marry Elizabeth.
Darren Mann says this season will be an “intense ride”, but “people are gonna love it.”
Michelle Randolph as Elizabeth Strafford
Liz is ready for the life of a rancher’s wife, but she’s also still coping with losing her and Jack’s unborn baby.
Timothy Dalton as Donald Whitfield
At the end of season one, greedy Whitfield paid the Duttons’ overdue taxes on their land, and he’s now holding it over their heads with the threat of taking the ranch for himself if they can’t pay him back in due course.
Jerome Flynn as Banner Creighton
The villain who terrorised the Duttons for much of season 1, Banner is back this season for more underhanded games.
Brian Geraghty as Zane
As Jacob’s second cowboy in command, Zane played a big part in keeping the ranch out of evil’s hands in the first season, and looks set to continue that role.
Jennifer Carpenter as Mamie Fossett
The Dexter actress is the biggest name to join the cast for season two, coming on board to play a US Deputy Marshall who becomes involved in the Montana saga.
Janet Montgomery as Hillary
Another new character, Hillary has been described as a thoughtful woman who has her sights set on justice, hinting she may end up being an ally to the Duttons
