Luca Guadagnino, we love your work. As the creative behind Timothée Chalamet’s breakout film Call Me By Your Name and the internet’s newest indie-movie obsession Queer, it’s clear the Italian director has an eye for a leading man and now, Austin Butler will soon be joining the lineup as the star of his upcoming American Psycho remake.

After many months of speculation that Jacob Elordi would be taking over the role from Christian Bale, Variety confirmed in December 2024 that Austin would be the latest actor to portray serial killer Patrick Bateman.

According to the publication, the film will not be a direct remake of the 2000 film but will serve as a new adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ original novel, with the script set to be created by The Laundromat’s Scott Z. Burns.

While we don’t yet know exactly what the film will look like, we *do* know that Luca is bound to take his signature stylistic take on the story, with Variety teasing that the reimagined film could incorporate a more intense, erotic incarnation of the original character lineup.

What is American Psycho about?

Based on the 1991 novel of the same name, American Psycho follows Patrick Bateman, a wealthy, arrogant investment banker who, as well as climbing the corporate ladder, also has a penchant for violence and murder.

Serving as the story’s unreliable narrator, Patrick paints himself as the picture of success – frequently flaunting his wealth, status, and social connections. Despite trying to paint himself as the picture-perfect it-boy of 1980s New York, the film follows his slow descent into complete and utter madness and blurs the lines between reality and Patrick’s psychotic delusions.

Reflecting on the character, the film’s original screenwriter Mary Harron said, “We talked about how Martian-like Patrick Bateman was, how he was looking at the world like somebody from another planet, watching what people did and trying to work out just the right way to behave.”
