Nearly two decades since the series finale, Malcolm in the Middle is officially returning for a reboot!
Fans learnt of the cult-classic sitcom’s return in December 2024 when Frankie Muniz, who played the titular role of Malcolm, shared a video to his Instagram account.
Dropping the announcement alongside his on-screen parents, Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek, series star Frankie Muniz shared, “OH MY GOSH! I’m so excited to announce that after 18 years, Malcolm in the Middle is returning with new episodes on @disneyplus! Get ready, we can’t wait for everyone to see what Malcolm and his family have been up to!”
With production set to commence on the new season in 2025, we’re rounding up everything you need to know about Malcolm’s upcoming reboot.
What happens in the Malcolm in the Middle reboot?
It’s been almost 25 years since Malcolm in the Middle debuted, but fortunately, we have a rough idea of what the new reboot series will be about.
According to the official synopsis, “Malcolm and his daughter are drawn into the family’s chaos when Hal and Lois demand his presence for their 40th wedding anniversary party.”
Does that tell us much? Not really, but that does mean that Malcolm will be balancing life with his dysfunctional family with the new demands of parenthood.
Who is the cast of the Malcolm in the Middle reboot?
In good news for OG fans of the show, Frankie Muniz has confirmed he will return as Malcolm.
Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek will also be returning as the dynamic mum and dad duo, Hal and Lois Wilkerson.
Malcolm’s brothers Francis and Reese are also set to return for the reboot, with both Christopher Masterson and Justin Berfield confirming they would be starring in the four-episode revival. We also know that the franchise’s original creator Linwood Boomer has signed on to write the latest episodes.
However, Erik Per Sullivan, who played the youngest brother Dewey, will not be back for the series. According the Variety, Caleb Ellsworth-Clark, who had roles in Fargo and The Expanse, will take on the role instead following Erik’s retirement from Hollywood 15 years ago.
“He wasn’t interested in acting at all. He goes to school at a very, very, very prestigious American university that he’s asked us all to be quiet about,” Jane Kaczmarek shared in a 2024 interview, revealing he was doing graduate work in Victorian literature.
She added that she admired his decision, explaining, “I think so many people think being in show business is just the greatest thing in the world, and it’s not for everybody…he’s a very grateful kid, for Dewey.”
How many episodes is the Malcolm in the Middle reboot?
While the original series may have delivered us over 150 episodes of epic one-liners, the upcoming Malcolm in the Middle reboot will feature only four episodes.
