Euphoria’s Sydney Sweeney has gushed about her friendship with on-screen sister and co-star Maude Apatow, admitting that has had a “hard time” maintaining female friendships in the past.
The 25-year-old star was the youngest honouree on Elle’s 2022 Women in Hollywood list, calling Apatow the “sister [she has] always wanted” as Apatow presented her with the honour.
“I am so lucky to be able to play a sister on Euphoria with you, and you’re my best friend. It’s such an amazing feeling because I always had a hard time having girlfriends, and you’re just everything to me.”
The actress has previously admitted that after she started traveling to LA for auditions from her hometown of Spokane, Washington, she lost a lot of close friends and was receiving criticism from community members.
“I had really close friends that suddenly weren’t close anymore, because of the things that their parents would say at the dinner table, ” Sweeney recalled in an interview with L’Officiel.
“And it was that kind of thing, where the parents would influence what these 13-year-old kids would say or think. And they’d be like, ‘I can’t believe Sydney’s parents are letting her go to the hell-ridden city’. Just their close-minded beliefs and they would talk about it at the dinner table, and the kids would take it to school and that’s just how everything would go around”.
But despite the negativity that followed Sweeney’s decision to pursue acting, her close friendship with Apatow has been a light at the end of a very long tunnel.
“It’s surprising that we were able to create the friendship,” Sydney explained to People of her relationship with Maude. “It’s so hard, not just as girls, to have friendships in our industry because we’re constantly traveling and moving from one project to another. You just don’t have that”.
And whilst their onscreen Euphoria characters Cassie Howard and Lexi Howard have some major problems, we couldn’t be happier to see that these thick-of-thieves pair have a much healthier relationship than that of their characters.
There is no news yet on when Euphoria season 3 will air. Sweeney is currently filming the new Marvel movie Madame Web, due for release in early 2024.
