There’s no better feeling than coming home after a shocking day and watching a feel-good movie. Two hours in front of the screen can make a hell of a difference to your mood. So instead of aimlessly searching through all the categories, we’ve done the hard work for you. You can thank us later!
Shrek
Voiced by: Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz and Eddie Murphy
We know what you’re wondering and the answer is no, you’re never too old to watch an animated movie.
It’s a cinematic masterpiece that follows Shrek, a smelly and gross ogre, who discovers his swamp has been taken over by fairytale creatures who are following Lord Farquaad’s orders. In an attempt to get his home back, he strikes a deal with the Lord who sends Shrek on a mission to rescue Princess Fiona. With a loud-mouth donkey that you can’t help but laugh at, we promise this movie will end your misery!
Juno
Starring: Ellen Page, Michael Cera and Jennifer Garner
It’s undoubtedly quirky (thanks to Michael Cera’s awkward character and his strange obsession with Tic Tacs), but this coming of age story that tackles tangled issues will make you feel better about your chosen life path.
When 16-year-old Juno accidentally falls pregnant she is forced to face adult decisions that will dictate the rest of her life. Too young to keep the baby, Juno chooses an affluent couple who have been unable to conceive a child of their own to adopt the unborn child. With the support of her family and best friend, Juno learns how to cope with a bulging belly at school, and in the end, winds up right where she needed to be.
Yes, it’s weird but it’s wonderful, hilarious and heartwarming.
The Intern
Starring: Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway
Ben Whittaker is a 70-year-old retired widower who is hired as an intern for an online clothing store run by Jules Ostin— a workaholic who lives off two hours of sleep and doesn’t see the value in Whittaker’s wisdom until she gets to know him. By the end of the film, Whittaker and Ostin have developed a relationship we rarely see on our screens today: a male-female friendship that isn’t sexual or romantic.
While the plot is simple and slow to begin with, persevere because along the way you’ll start to appreciate and admire the chemistry between De Niro and Hathaway. There’ll be laughs and tears but it will brighten your day.
To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before
Starring: Noah Centineo and Lana Condor
Yes, it’s a teen romance, and no, it’s not as lame as you think. It’s actually the kind of teen film that you can believe in, and that’s pretty rare nowadays. ‘To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before’ provides an honest, realistic and relatable take on sex, love, friendship, and self-confidence. And whether you are willing to admit it or not, you’ll take some important messages away from it.
The story follows Lara Jean Covey, a 16-year-old half-Korean girl whose love letters are mysteriously emailed to the five boys she’s ever had feelings for. In an attempt to cover up who wrote the letters, Lara Jean enlists Peter to become her fake boyfriend. While he had little interest in her at the start, as they begin to spend more time together, the most unlikely bond is formed.
Bridesmaids
Starring: Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig and Rose Byrne
It’s an oldie but a goldie and perhaps one of the few movies that’ll make you laugh from the get-go. The movie follows Annie, a single woman whose life is turned upside down when her best friend Lillian gets engaged and she is forced to contend with Helen – a snobby know it all who has bigger, better and more expensive plans for her friend’s bachelorette party.
Melissa McCarthy, who plays Lillian’s fiance’s sister is hilarious, crass and inappropriate. And there’s stand out that will leave you in stitches.
