She’s one half of The Veronicas and has had a high-flying career, but when it comes to her personal life Jess Origliasso’s relationship with Ruby Rose was arguably her most famous.
Jess, who is set to be one of Celebrity Apprentice Australia‘s biggest characters, briefly dated Australian actress and model Ruby in 2008.
Though they broke up, the two rekindled their relationship in late 2016 – Ruby even wrote, directed and starred in the steamy music video for The Veronica’s hit On Your Side.
“We’ve had such an incredible journey just as friends over the last eight years and then we shot this music video and something changed for us. She’s just incredible and I just had to tell her how I felt,” Jess confessed to Rove McManus and Sam Frost on their radio show.
“I am the luckiest person in the world to be with someone who’s the most compassionate, ambitious, strong, beautiful woman.”
At a rally for marriage equality back in 2016, Jess also spoke passionately about her personal experience dating a woman.
“When I did the speech for the last marriage-equality rally I was dating a boy. I remember writing the speech thinking that I’m treated as a fully equal citizen. Now purely because of the gender of the person I am in love with, I have those rights taken away,” she told the crowds.
“It’s a really confronting feeling. We cannot get married.”
However, whilst Jess was dating Ruby, there was a lot of drama with Jess’ twin sister and bandmate Lisa.
In a now deleted tweet, the Orange Is The New Black star sarcastically suggested Lisa’s happy reaction to Australia’s same-sex marriage vote outcome was contradictory.
“So glad to see Lisa Origliasso screaming in excitement about the yes vote after telling us she thinks we should feel ‘lucky’ we don’t get stoned to death like they do in other countries and get over it a few months ago … Really warms my heart,” she wrote.
Speaking to Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O on their radio show, Ruby, who was and still is based in the US, revealed that she and Jess had gone to couples therapy.
“We’re at a point now where we properly know how to communicate at a long distance which has been the hardest thing I think for anyone in the industry, having a long-distance relationship.”
However, the couple announced their split in April 2018.
“I’ve spent the past two years learning and sharing my life with an amazing human being,” Ruby tweeted as she confirmed the split. “An experience for which I am very blessed.
“Break ups are always incredibly hard on the people involved but I can only be grateful for the experiences we shared. It’s with a heavy heart to share that Jess and I parted ways a few months ago. We still love each other very much and I will always support her and be her biggest advocate. With love x.”
After the break up, however, Jess shared some surprising insights into her and Ruby’s “complex” relationship.
“I’m still trying to come to terms with the reality of it every day so it’s really hard to explain to anybody. There was just so much that happened, so much that I can’t even get into it,” she told Kyle and Jackie O.
“At the end of the day I think the most important thing to remember is that we’re all human beings, people have their struggles, people have their inner demons people have their own stuff going on.
“For me, it was time to leave that situation and be as happy and healthy as I deserve to be.”
Jess also shared how her and Ruby’s relationship affected the one she had with her sister.
“After almost 15 years of The Veronicas, there was no discussion, no announcement, it just stopped,” Jess said in her and Lisa’s reality show, Blood is for Life.
“Lis and I didn’t talk for a year. I was in a relationship that wasn’t good for me. I became isolated. I had nobody anymore, I only had my relationship. I didn’t have my mum or my dad. When it became too much for me, I walked away.”
Things turned even more sour when in 2018 Jess went public with her new partner, Kai Carlton.
“Congratulations, so happy for you both,” Ruby commented on the photo, but Jess’ response stopped fans in their tracks.
“@RubyRose I have requested you not contact me for over four months now. You have been given my grace of being ignored on every other private platform, so the fact you continue to ignore this to contact me here publicly under the guise of wishing me well, is continued harassment,” the musician replied.
Ruby responded: “That is news to me. Copy that. Good vibes only.”
If you go back through both Jess and Ruby’s Instagrams, they’ve removed all traces of their respective ex.
Though she was briefly engaged to Kai, Jess is now single whilst her sister Lisa has been married to husband Logan Huffman since November 2018.
Ruby meanwhile appears to be dating American actress Caity Lotz and posted a sweet tribute to her on New Year’s Eve 2020.
“Happy birthday to the sunshine of my life, my ride or die, my best mate the one and only Caity ❤️❤️❤️.. It may not be a rager of a night but boy did we go ham in Party City anyway!”
