Last night, Diana Rouvas was announced as the winner of The Voice Australia! But despite walking away with $100,000 prize money and a recording contract with Universal Music or EMI, fans are less than impressed Boy George’s protege took out the title.
WATCH: The moment that has viewers CONVINCED that The Voice 2019 is ‘rigged’
Angry viewers of the Channel Nine singing competition are up in arms over the contestant’s victory, with many claiming the series is “rigged” after an unfortunate website crash early on in the episode meant thousands of fans were unable to cast their vote.
“It’s rigged I can’t vote, can’t get through, won’t connect,” one enraged Twitter user wrote of the technical hitch. “I can’t get on to vote? What is going on channel 9?” another added.
“I am more sure than ever this show is 100% rigged. I won’t be back next year. Don’t care who wins. I’m out.”
In a statement given to the Daily Mail while the show was still live, a Channel Nine representative revealed the problem was not widespread and occurred due to a high number of votes.
“We have had an overwhelming number of votes throughout the week. Hundreds of thousands of votes have been coming through during tonight’s show which has caused some technical problems for a small number of viewers, however, votes are continuing to flow through,” the statement read. “The technical problem has now been solved. We appreciate everybody’s support for the artists and the show. Voting is still open.”
Diana— who beat Melbourne busker Daniel Shaw— was lost for words when she was announced as this year’s winner.
“I’m overwhelmed. I’m overwhelmed. I am dribbling everywhere. I am honoured. Thank you Australia,” the 35-year-old said in her emotional acceptance speech.
