In her time as radio host, Kristie Mercer of The Thinkergirls met her fair share of celebrities, but no-one compares to Kelly Rowland.
“I never have felt nervous or in awe of someone, but for Kelly there’s something a bit superhuman about her. There’s something non-human about Destiny’s Child, growing up watching such strength in lyrics, in voices – being proud of being a woman,” she continues.

It’s a sentiment that rings true for Mercer, who suffered the loss of her radio gig, the end of a long-term relationship and who openly battled alcohol issues – all in the same year. She reveals that her confidence levels hit new lows before the show started filming, which is why she’s so proud of herself for even applying for it.
“The dream is to have the belief in myself, to be able to call myself a singer. For a long time, I used to say, ‘I can sing,’ but, ‘I’m not an artist … not a singer.’ Finding the belief to sing in public again is the best part of my journey,” she says.“I know I’ve got a pretty good voice, but you just never know the calibre of other singers or what [the coaches are] looking for,” she shares.
So, what can we expect? “I’ve been told I sound a bit like Amy Winehouse,” she beams. Bring it on!
