Ian Thorpe hasn’t ruled out the possibility of starting a pool cleaning business after his tongue-in-cheek ads got people talking.
The former Olympian went on The Project last night to address the rumours that he was about to enter the chlorine testing trade. “It was so ridiculous I didn’t think anyone would believe it. But they did.”
Admitting now that it actually seems like it could be a good idea, the five-time gold medalist didn’t rule out the possibility of making Thorpedo Pool Cleaning a reality. Host Carrie joked that many people would love to see Ian come and clean their pool.
Indeed public support has bolstered for Thorpe since he came out as gay to Michael Parkinson. “I struggled coming out, but I haven’t had an issue being out,” he told the desk. “It’s been a real mature response. And I’ve been appreciative of it.”
Now retired, rather than sweeping leaves from backyard pools, the 33-year-old has taken to mentoring Australia’s up-and-coming athletes ahead of the Rio Olympics this year. “It’s not that I owe a duty, I want to do this”, the ABC reported earlier this year.
“I’ve wanted to be more involved in the sport, I’ve wanted to be supportive of our athletes as well because when you spend time with them, when you get to know them, they’re a great bunch of young people.”
Thorpe also acted as an ambassador for Prince Harry’s recent Invictus Games.
