There has been some controversy over who is and who isn’t a real supermodel and it’s fuelling a “Model War”.
Rebecca Romijn told ET that Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid were “social media” models, “not true supermodels” whilst Stephanie Seymour claims that supermodels are a “thing of the past”.
Now Tyra Banks has addressed the comments and drama it is sparking in the fashion industry. The 42-year-old tweeted “This supermodel war is raging and it’s really tearing me apart”.
Banks has also taken to her website to write about the “Model War” in more detail. In the post, Tyra refers to herself as a “sort of hybrid” in the industry, before addressing both the supermodels of the past and the present wave of supermodels.
Banks believes the feud stems from how both waves of supermodels rose to fame. One wave did it without technology and social media, whilst the other uses it extensively.
According to Banks, the supermodels of the past, “worked runways and shot magazine spreads together, schlepped to countless go-sees, used pay phones for on-the-go communication, and subways for transportation around the globe – no cell phones, Ubers or Lyfts around. Our GPS were huge, awkward maps in Italian and French that we pulled out when lost and scared.
So in the eyes of Banks, Jenner and Hadid are “real supermodels”. She says to the new wave of supermodels, “You’re on countless covers, rule all the campaigns, walk everyone’s runway, have top designers on speed dial and everyone knows your name”.
Kendall Jenner, 20 has also taken to her own website to share her views on the matter. She writes, “If people want to call Gigi and I supermodels now, it doesn’t take anything away from supermodels of the past,”, continuing, “obviously, I have so much respect for those women, but right now, we’re the models of this time.”
