We’d make a strong case that Fleabag, Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s two season dramedy, should be on every must-watch list when it comes to modern TV.

The series, which first aired in 2016, rocked audiences with its raw emotion and humour, truly showing Phoebe as one of the great TV and film writers of our time.

Based on her 2013 one-woman show of the same name, Phoebe constructed a dry-witted, sex-obsessed, deeply insecure character known only to the audience as Fleabag.

Consistently breaking the fourth wall, we were given direct access to her thoughts and feelings in such a way that created a strangely personal relationship, leaving fans completely devastated once Phoebe announced no further seasons would be created.

What is Fleabag about?

Fleabag follows an unnamed narrator, known only as that – Fleabag – as she navigates life and love while living in London following the tragedy of losing her best friend, Boo, in an accident. She rejects offers of help from her uptight sister, Claire, and her seedy husband, Martin, and continues to worry her distant father, known only as ‘Dad’, and her stepmother, known only as ‘Godmother’.

While season one sees Fleabag dealing with the fallout of the tragic loss of her friend, interlaced with her memories of losing her mother a few years prior, the second season shows her soften and open up to the best character on the show, The Priest, or The Hot Priest, who single-handedly upset the zeitgeist with his appearance on the show.

While the show has some incredibly dark moments, it’s also incredibly funny in the way it depicts the sisterly love between Fleabag and Claire, and incredibly odd relationship to their Godmother, played by a surprisingly cruel Olivia Colman. While certain moments will have you in stitches, others will have you bawling – and processing the shock of swinging so wildly from one emotion to the other.

Will there be another season of Fleabag?

Sadly, it really doesn’t look like there will be! Despite the second season walking away with four Primetime Emmy Awards and two Golden Globes, Phoebe seems pretty resolved to hang up Fleabag’s fabulous black coat for good.

“I feel like it’s done, but I do have a fantasy of bringing her back when I’m, like, 45 or 50,” Phoebe told The Hollywood Reporter.

“She went on the biggest journey over the past two seasons, and she started as someone who sort of hated herself and ended up as someone believing that she could love again and forgive herself.

“I have to respect that arc and let her go and live for a bit,” she said.

“The reasons to end never felt as guttural as they do now … I’m a big follower of the old gut.”

Also, Phoebe is pretty busy anyway. She was recently credited as a writer on the most-recent James Bond film, No Time to Die, and continues to write another series she created, Killing Eve.
