You is back for a third season and Joe seems more unhinged than ever

Settle in folks, it's going to be good.

Penn Badgley said it best: Joe Goldberg is not a heartthrob, he is a murderer. But for some reason, countless fans have developed real-life crushes on the murderous man from You.

“He loves books! He’s romantic! He’s just looking for his soulmate!” Yes, Jessica. He also kills people.

Penn, former Gossip Girl actor and star of our dreams, is a Hollywood mega-babe. There’s no doubt about it. Wearing a baseball cap and the occasional creepy stare was never going to make the actor seem any less attractive.

But you know what should make the character less appealing? Stalking and bloody murder. If all of that didn’t do it, perhaps the new season will.

At the end of the second season, Joe and his partner, Love (Victoria Pedretti), had seemingly swapped a life of killing sprees for a quiet life in the suburbs. Why? Because Love was pregnant.

Even though Joe appeared to have grand plans of unaliving his girlfriend when he realised she was equally as unhinged as him, he stuck around. He might be a killer, but he’s kind of got a soft spot for protecting kids.

However, having sociopathic murderers for parents? Your dad thinking he’s trapped in a ‘prison of his own making’ because of your existence? That’s one twisted dynamic for a baby to be born into.

And yet, this is where we find ourselves at the beginning of the third season, proving You will be as messed-up as ever when it returns. Not only that, but Netflix has confirmed the series will return for a Fourth Season – meaning we absolutely know that Season Three will be serving up some major twists and cliffhangers.

So, what can we expect from season three? As Joe ominously says in the trailer: “I never thought to wonder, what happens after boy gets girl?”

At least that line should help turn those final few ‘Joe is a hopeless romantic’ fans into hardcore ‘Joe is a creep who just likes to hunt women’ believers. And now that we’re all on the same page, we can get back to watching these two weirdos with some kind of extreme fascination.

Joe may tell you in the voiceover of the new trailer that “things will be different this time.” But will they really, Joe?

Violence, murder, burying bodies, couples therapy and a new baby boy are all in the mix as the trailer offers up flashing glimpses of the series to come. Set to an eerie rendition of Britney Spears’ Hit Me Baby One More Time, it’s safe to say things are not as they seem in suburbia.

Joe has transformed into a doting dad, sure, but he’s still got a delusional perspective of the life he’s living. One he frequently shares via his signature voiceover.

“For you, I’d move to some soulless suburb,” he narrates to his infant son in the trailer. “For you, I’d marry the monster, your mother.”

Don’t want to tell you how to live your life, Joe, but if I was a murderous fiend I probably wouldn’t throw the word ‘monster’ around so willy-nilly.

While Joe and Love clearly have some unresolved marital issues – which they attempt to work out in counselling – they’ve also got some intense drama with the neighbours.

As Joe sets his sights on a new woman, and her husband appears to set his sights on Joe, things are sure to unravel. Quickly. But after Season Two, the one thing we can count on, is to expect the unexpected.
