Speaking on the podcast, Ethan – who is married to actress Juliette Lewis’ younger sister, Brandy Lewis – revealed that he has always struggled with his weight and aged 10, the star weighed over 90kg’s. As a result, his parents spent years putting him on various diets.
"I had this idea now that food was something that people didn't want me to have," he explained. "So if I wanted to have more, I needed to do it privately, and it became something that I was withholding from people."
Suplee's relationship with food became unhealthy, admitting that at one stage of his life, he'd hunt for 24-hour drive-thrus and eat "three meals before bed". By the time he reached his twenties, he says, "I was numbing myself out with food alcohol and drugs".
Ethan admits that his larger size actually put him at an advantage in Hollywood, and he went on to score parts in Boy Meets World, Mallrats, American History X and the TV show My Name Is Earl.
However, after My Name Is Earl was cancelled, Ethan knew he had to do something about his weight.
“After My Name Is Earl, I started obsessively riding bicycles,” he told EW in 2017. “I actually did get properly thin at one point — I was nine per cent body fat. But I was also riding a bicycle six to eight hours a day, six days.
“After two years of that, my wife said, ‘Hey, idiot, you can’t retire and ride bicycles. You have to go get a job.’”
However, he says he then started to bulk up and began being offered other roles in films such as The Wolf of Wall Street, Deepwater Horizon and Santa Clarita Diet.
The star now keeps fit by doing Muay Thai kick-boxing classes three times a week. He has also completely eliminated sugar from his diet.
