Speaking to The Daily Telegraph, Whelan, 36, opened up about her goals for this year.
"There's more competition than ever before even though there's much more content," the US-based star said.
"I'd like to do a bit more comedy, I've steered a lot more towards drama lately, I don't know why, so I would really like to get back to comedy...it's so much fun."
This comes after the 36-year-old blonde headed home to attend the Magic Millions race carnival, held at the Gold Coast.
Whelan's most recent work includes a thriller titles Inconceivable with Gina Gershon and she also starred in the Hallmark TV movie Romance at Reindeer Lodge.
In an interview with The Morning Show late last year, Whelan said: "Hallmark movies are the best!"
She continued: "It's such a family oriented kind of thing, it has a huge audience in America."
All the best to the star!
