Why are the Golden Globes controversial?
In 2021 The Los Angeles Times investigated the organisation behind the Globes, The Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Their investigation found that the group had no black members, amongst other allegations of ethical improprieties, and the HFPA subsequently came under fire for its lack of diversity.
This year, there was no telecast, celebrity guests, red carpet or live stream of the event after numerous stars and studios boycotted the Golden Globes, with Tom Cruise even returning his three Globes.
Over the last year, the HFPA has revamped its membership and added new members - including six black voting members, but it’s still far from enough, which is why it's still uncertain if celebs will return to the Golden Globes in 2023.
The 2023 awards show will be telecasted, with comedian Jerrod Carmichael named as host.
Already, Brendan Fraser who has received a Golden Globe nomination for The Whale announced he will not be attending. The actor has previously alleged he was groped in 2003 by Philip Berk, an HFPA member and former president.
Despite NBC dropping the 2022 Globes from its broadcast schedule, the Golden Globe Awards are set to return to TV in January 2023.
