Featuring the tensest opening sequence seen on the small screen in years, political thriller Bodyguard was one of the most buzzed about shows of 2018. Former Game of Thrones actor Madden stars as Sergeant David Budd, a war vet, a separated father of two and a bodyguard assigned to controversial home secretary Julia Montague (Keeley Hawes), whose stance on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan Budd violently disagrees with. When Montague is the target of an assassination attempt, Budd is in the thick of the intrigue, but is he complicit in the plot? Won: Best Foreign Language Film and Alfonso Cuarón for Best Director
Released briefly in cinemas as well as on Netflix, this Spanish and Mixtec film is written and directed by Cuarón, known for his previous work on cult classics Y Tu Mamá También and Children of Men and crown pleasers Gravity and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. The film, which is hotly tipped for Oscar attention, tells the story of young maid Cleo (Yalitza Aparicio), who works for a middle-class family in Roma, Mexico City. Set in 1970, the film draws heavily on Cuarón's own upbringing to tell an intensely personal tale as well as depict the larger social and political picture of the era. Watch the trailer above.
