BEST MUSICAL OR COMEDY
CR The Marvelous Mrs Maisel scooped the pool at the Emmys and last year’s Globes, but something tells me the HFPA has moved on. The Kominsky Method may nudge it out of the running. You can’t underestimate the popularity of stars Michael Douglas and Alan Arkin with the HFPA old guard. My money’s on Kominsky, but my heart lies with Midge.
GS The HFPA’s picks in this category are often surprising. I would predict a win for underdog The Good Place but Season 3 has been uneven, so while Kominsky is the safe bet, perhaps the superior (in my mind) Barry will defy expectations.
MD Kominsky proves Chuck Lorre isn’t just a cheesy sitcom hack. This excellent comedy also has a lot of emotional depth as it faces decidedly unfunny subjects like death, loneliness and addiction. At its core, The Kominsky Method is about friendship. Douglas and Arkin put a lot of heart into their fraught but caring relationship.
BEST MINISERIES OR TELEVISION FILM
CR This will be hotly contested, but Sharp Objects is a real contender. Everything about this series from director Jean-Marc Vallée is excellent – the casting (Amy Adams, Patricia Clarkson and Australia’s Eliza Scanlen as the world’s creepiest teen), the writing, the performances, the cinematography – exquisite.
GS Prolific showrunner Ryan Murphy usually does well at the Globes, and so it’s a given The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story will win, right? Escape at Dannemora was the only nominee that had me coming back for more, but I’d be surprised if it wins.
MD Versace is just what many voters love: commercial, emotional and a prime example of celebrity navel gazing. It walks a fine line between tacky exploitative rubbish and depth, and that’s the Globes to a T. The tragic killing of the iconic fashion designer is rendered in lurid style, while serving up deeper commentary about the nature of fame.
