Hamish Blake and Andy Lee have everyone talking with their new series True Story with Hamish and Andy – with plenty of buzz still surrounding the subject of their first episode – Carol – who confessed to faking appendicitis to get out of a 1986 school poetry assignment.
Carol’s elaborate high school lie – which was made possible by memorising convincing details of the condition from an episode of A Country Practice – went so far that she actually underwent surgery to remove her healthy appendix. She had a history of real medical issues, having low vision (which is sometimes described as being ‘legally blind’) but on this occasion Carol was definitely not in need of hospital care.
Hilariously, she didn’t even get out of the homework assignment she was avoiding – so she went through the crazy charade for nothing.
Now Hamish and Andy have revealed an outrageous new detail about the incident, which wasn’t included in their TV show.
Guest starring on the latest episode of WHO’s TV podcast, Binge List, the hilarious duo confided to host Matt Denby that there was a memorable epilogue to Carol’s extreme tale of deception.
‘One scene that got cut out, just for time, was where we asked her, did you ever tell your mum the truth,’ Andy exclusively revealed on Binge List.
‘She said, ‘I told my mum ten years later that I’d faked appendicitis to get out of school homework and gone through with the operation.’
So what exactly did her mum say?
‘Carol said, “She asked me whether the blindness was real!’
Adds Hamish, ‘So it was like, have you also been lying about being legally blind?’
