Year 1: The Fully-Curled Harry Styles (2010)
2010 was the start of the worldwide One Direction obsession. When he, Zayn, Louis, Liam, and Niall got together as a band on The X Factor, people immediately fell in love with them as a group and as individuals.
But aside from Harry’s voice, the ladies fell for his out-of-control curly locks that seemed to stand out compared to the other four members’ hairstyles.
Year 2: The Curled-Ends Harry Styles (2011)
A year can make all the difference, even in Harry’s career and hairstyle. When One Direction finished third place on the British singing competition, fans didn’t even have to wait too long to hear their new music and to see them in their music videos.
Harry’s hair seemed more controlled throughout this year, as seen in the two music videos they released. With the top of his hair styled straighter, and the ends kept curled.
Year 3: The Always-Windblown Harry Styles (2012)
Harry, along with the band continued to rise to fame in 2012 when they went on tour for their Up All Night album. It was also during this year that he was reportedly dating country-singer-turned-pop-superstar Taylor Swift, who may or may not have written a song about Harry called ‘Style’. But who else would have a “James Dean, daydream look in his eye”, or “long hair, slick-backed”?
Year 4: The Bed-Haired Harry Styles (2013)
This year, Harry Styles let his hair grow – and grow it did. He took on a more “serious” look with most people seeing less of a boy and more of a man, and that translated into his hairstyle. He kept the sides of his hair in short curls and the top long and swept up. It was as if he hand-combed it to perfection every time he stepped out of the house.
Year 5: The Baby-Bunned Harry Styles (2014)
At this point, we were sure that Harry was just letting biology do its thing by keeping his hair long, but we didn’t know that it would get this far. By 2014, he started sporting “baby buns”, “man buns,” and all other kinds of styles that one could make with a ponytail. But he did look really Style-ish while doing it.
Year 6: The Surfer-Dude Harry Styles (2015)
This was a difficult year, not just for the fans, but for the band as well. Zayn Malik, the vocal powerhouse of One Direction, quit the band to “follow what was right in his heart”. It brought about many changes in the band’s music styles, and we like to think it affected Harry’s hairstyle as well!
Though we don’t know what got into him four years ago, we wish the hair had stayed a tad longer. It was the perfect crossover of a “fresh-from-the-beach” look and, well, Jesus.
Year 7: The Wavy, Slick-Backed Harry Styles (2016)
As if the hiatus announcement wasn’t enough to shake us to the core, Harry’s hairstyle in 2016 was another shocker, and “Harry Styles cut his hair” and “Harry Styles haircut” quickly trended on all social media platforms. From his long and flowy hair, he showed the world a chopped-off ponytail and proved that he can also rock short and wavy hair.
It’s good to know that Harry was in the safe hands of celebrity hairstylist Anthony Turner. He posted the same photo and captioned it with “@harrystyles @another_man #chop! #anotherman #harrystyles #haircut #littleprince'strust,” mentioning the charity where Harry donated his hair.
Year 8: The Straight, Slick-Backed Harry Styles (2017)
2017 was the year Harry Styles opened himself to the world of acting by starring in Christopher Nolan’s film Dunkirk. We don’t know if it was for the movie or if it was just his preference, but Harry continued to don the short hair during this time.
It was also this year he announced his first solo single, which would lead to a self-titled solo album in May. He received a lot of praise for his versatility in his career and his style.
Year 9: Harry Styles’ Natural Hair (2018)
Harry Styles kept his hair au naturel in 2018, letting it grow and giving us some major 2010-2011 feelings but still showing that he’s not that same boy anymore. He also dipped his toes in producing, serving as the executive producer of a show on CBS called Happy Together. And to expand his world and his list of talents even more, he got into modelling. Specifically, he joined a photoshoot for luxury Italian brand Gucci.
Year 10: The Brand-New Harry Styles (2019)
Present-day Harry still finds a way to keep us on our toes. A few days ago, a photo of him sporting his most ‘un-Harry’ look yet surfaced and the Internet just lost its mind. Some fans are hoping this new look is for a secret film role. But his hairline, which seems to have receded over the years, is barely noticeable with this new haircut – leaving fans to speculate whether that was the point of the new look.
This year, Harry also had the opportunity of co-hosting the 2019 MET Gala. See his look below:
Though we aren’t sure how we feel about Harry Styles’ short hair just yet, we can always look back at what his hair was – that way, we know the potential of what his hair could be. From the fully curled Harry to the brand new “cleaned up” Harry, the way he changes things up every year keeps things fresh!
