Fans all over the world eagerly waited for the release of Avatar. And it didn’t disappoint, with many critics arguing it redefined the possibilities of cinema due to the outstanding visuals. So it’s little wonder the film - directed by James Cameron - brought in a whopping $2,787,965,087 making it the highest grossing film of all time. The epic sci-fi also surpassed the previous record by more than 50 per cent.
Set in 2154, the world is dying and as a result, US military travel to a distant planet called Pandora where they hope to extract a mineral that will save the earth. But blue-skinned people stand in their way, and they are determined to destroy those invading their planet. The film received an impressive 7.8/10 on IMDb and 83 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes – a trusted source which collates professional and audience reviews.
Coming in second is all-time classic, Titanic. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, the romantic drama not only shaped a generation but went on to earn 14 Oscar nominations at the 1998 Academy Awards. In addition to winning Best Picture, director James Cameron received three Oscar’s including Best Director. However, after declaring himself “King of the World” in an interview after the show, he received some serious flak. Despite this, the film was a success and raked in an incredible $2,187,463,994.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens
The 2015 film was an exciting comeback for the popular franchise and the hype surrounding it was incredible. Having some of the most well-known characters including Leia Organa, Han Solo, Luke Skywalker and Chewbacca in the film meant it held a similar spirit to the original trilogy which ended with the Return of Jedi in 1983. As a result, the film was not only well received but also brought in an impressive $2,068,223,624.
Avengers: Infinity War
Bringing together some of the world’s biggest superheroes such as Thor, Guardians of the Galaxy and Spider Man, and adapted from the famous Marvel Comics series in 1991, this film shattered a bunch of box office records, including the highest grossing movie of 2018 and the fastest film to gross $1 billion in under 11 days. Directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, the film was nominated for multiple awards and brought in $2,045,052,992 overall.
With incredible cinematography that brought ancient dinosaurs to life, Jurassic World was a box-office triumph and loved by movie buffs all around the globe. However, some critics argue that the inventiveness didn’t match the original and the storyline was somewhat subpar. Despite this, the film ended up grossing $1,671,713,208, coming in fifth just behind Avengers.
