What is House of the Dragon?
House of the Dragon will take place in Westeros, just like Game of Thrones. But this time, we’re going back another 200 years, when House Targaryen was at the top of the reign, controlling the Seven Kingdoms.
At the beginning of Game of Thrones, we saw a very young Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen, who married Kahl Drogo to strengthen the remaining exiled Targaryens (at that point, just her and her brother, Viserys), who want to retake the iron throne from Robert Baratheon.
Meanwhile, we learn of the ‘crazed’ nature of the Targaryen families from those who have taken the throne from them: the Baratheons and the Starks. But all things in Westeros are nuanced, and we’ll take any opportunity to learn a bit more.
Which Targaryens will appear in the show?
The show will focus on the Targaryens and the war of succession, known in the book series as ‘The Dance of Dragons’.
It begins when King Viserys I names his firstborn, Princess Rhaenyra, as his successor, a move that is very illegal in Westeros.
This sets off a chain of events leading to an all-out civil war, bringing the thrills and violence we’d come to expect from Game of Thrones. But the Targaryens have dragons, so we’re expecting the fire and fighting to be kicked up a notch.
