What causes enlarged pores?
There are several factors that can cause enlarged pores. The main ones are genetics, excessive oil production, the natural ageing process and sun damage.
Can you tighten, shrink, or reduce pores?
You can minimise the appearance of pores.
How does one reduce pore size or the appearance of pores?
Having a good skincare routine especially cleansing and exfoliating regularly, as well professional treatments can help minimise the appearance of pores. Chemical peels, microdermabrasion and some laser and IPL treatments can be beneficial.
NOTE: The blackheads on your nose may not be blackheads... Sebaceous filaments are the tube-like structures that line your pores and, when your skin produces more oil, become more visible.
For those dealing with pesky sebaceous filaments, what’s the best treatment option? Do extractions help?
The best treatments for sebaceous filaments are exfoliating treatments such as chemical peels, microdermabrasion and some laser treatments.
Extractions can be done, but I would suggest seeing a skincare professional to avoid damage being done to the skin if the extractions are not performed correctly. Extractions are not suitable for everyone.
What ingredients should one look for when targeting pores?
Ingredients to look for include Glycolic acid (AHA) and Salicylic acid (BHA), which will help to exfoliate and remove dead skin cells. Retinol and retinoids will help reduce the appearance of open pores as well as unclog pores. Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3, it can help regulate oil production. Tea tree oil is also helpful as it’s anti-inflammatory and can reduce the appearance of pores.
