“I think there is a big chance that she’s not going to recognise my voice at all. If she turns her chair, I think she’s going to be in for a big shock,” the young singer explained.
Auditioning with a chilling rendition of Rihanna and Mikky Ekko’s song Stay, Saraya turned three chairs, with her Auntie bursting into tears at the sight of her, and their family to the side of the stage.
When she found her voice again, Mauboy began with a quiet “Hey, Raya.”
She went onto explain that Saraya was her niece, while the other judges reacted with shock.
In a heartwarming exchange, Jess told Saraya that she was proud of her, and to go with her heart when it came to choosing a coach, leading into Saraya choosing Rita Ora as her coach.
So, who is Saraya Mauboy-Hudson?
The 17-year-old lives in Darwin and seems to have a super active life alongside her singing, playing both football and soccer.
While she hasn’t released any music, she has posted a few covers on the Instagram account, rayascovers.
Apart from her amazing musical and sporting talent, she seems to live a pretty regular teenage life, often posting images of herself with her friends, and serving excellent outfits at the same time.
As for her family, Saraya and Jess seem to be really close, despite her devious plan to keep her audition from her aunt.
“We are really close,” Saraya told AAA.
“I (have watched Jess’s Australian Idol audition), it was so incredible to watch, to see from where she started and where she is now, and knowing she has always been insanely talented.
“It was something that I was also nervous to live up to,” Saraya said.
Jess’ role as a coach was not announced until early this year, which created some stress for Saraya.
“It made it more nerve-racking to know she was going to be in one of those chairs,” she admitted.
“I just didn’t want to have high expectations from anyone,” she told TV Week.
If tonight’s episode is anything to go by, Saraya’s has gone above and beyond what anyone could expect of her.
