Nicole Richie doesn’t just go light on the makeup, she likes to skip it all together.
Her reason for joining the Makeup-Free Movement is less about starting a revolution like Alicia Keys, and more a decision inspired by the health of her skin. “I stay away from makeup because it clogs my skin,” the House of Harlow 1960 designer tells PeopleStyle for our “5 Questions” video series above.
“I know people [who] are so comfortable in makeup and they feel alive and that is what they love to do,” she continues. “So I wouldn’t say that I am against it because I know people that really get joy and feel the most like themselves when they put on makeup. I feel the most like myself when I don’t have any on and so that’s the road that I go down.”
And she’s proud of it, as she often posts no-makeup selfies on Instagram (below).
“That’s probably the one rule that I do,” she adds, while chatting off-screen. “Some people love to wear makeup and that’s their thing. They like it. They’re comfortable in it. It’s not something that I would do. I like having a bare face. That’s me.”
Meanwhile, Alicia Keys likes looking fresh-faced to make a statement. For example, just this weekend, she attended the VMAs in sans makeup, below, and people took notice.
The singer explained her decision in a Lenny Letter earlier this summer, noting that she wants to start a revolution: “I don’t want to cover up anymore. Not my face, not my mind, not my soul, not my thoughts, not my dreams, not my struggles, not my emotional growth. Nothing.”
So whatever the reason for going makeup-free, the movement is picking up momentum for celebrities!
