By now we all know that when winter rolls around, it’s time to adjust our skincare and add some much needed moisture back into parched skin.

But what about our hair? Our hair is just as much a part of our general beauty upkeep is it not? So ensuring we pay just as much care to our locks as we do our skin is essential to keeping it happy and healthy in chilly weather.

To get all of the dirty details about how to care for our hair during winter, we spoke to Founder and Director of Sydney-based Salon HER, Michael Kelly, for his tips and tricks.

“The main concerns during the cooler period are scalp health and dehydration in hair. The changes in climate can restrict the blood flow to the scalp and can cause irritation and sensitivity which can result in dry & tight scalp & can make your lengths feel less nourished than usual”, Michael told Who.

If there is anything to focus on when it comes to hair during winter it seems to be hydration, hydration, hydration is the answer. So looking for products that are extra nourishing will have your hair thanking you in the long run.

Can’t tell if your locks are in need of some moisture? According to Michael, “if you find your ends are starting to become a little dull or your fingers are getting stuck in your ends as you’re flipping your part then this is probably a sign that you need some nourishment.”

If you work in an office you’ll probably understand the struggle of aircon drying out your skin, but it can also have adverse affects on your hair.

According to Michael, “heating can add unnecessary pressure to hair and also so can the erratic changes in temperature if you’re going from hot to cold to hot to cold.”

Michael’s last hot tip is to not forget the importance of proper scalp care, “it is literally the root of all your hair issues”, he says. “Purity to your scalp will always lead to healthy hair and a healthy amount of oil production. We know from skin care that oils are good for the skin and the same is for your scalp.”

If you’re looking for a fun hack to try introducing to your hair routine, MONDAY Haircare founder, Jaimee Lupton, says “blasting your hair with cold water after conditioner will help seal the hair cuticle and give you a nice shine, but if you can’t bear it on a chilly winter morning, try keeping your conditioner in the fridge instead!”

MONDAY Haircare Moisture conditioner, $11.50, ASOS

Jaimee Lupton of MONDAY Haircare suggests “not using conditioner is a big [winter hair mistake]. People will often skip it if they have fine hair or oily hair and roots, however it’s really important for nourishing the rest of your hair and protecting from breakage. If this is you, give your roots an extra wash, and just focus your conditioner on the mid-lengths and ends. Alternatively, you can try using your conditioner before your shampoo to keep your hair from being weighed down.”
