By now we know that the humble trench coat is an outwear essential that isn’t going to be leaving our wardrobe anytime soon. The wearable and effortlessly chic piece is the perfect winter throw over that can elevate any outfit in an instant.

Yet sometimes we want to branch out and go beyond our comfort zones, and we’re looking towards white trench coats for wintery touch.

As much as we love a classic camel trench coat (and we love a classic camel trench coat), shades of white are the hue to watch this winter.

Whether it be bone, cream, snow or oat – a white trench coat certainly makes a statement and feels so oh-so-on-trend this season.

Now you may be thinking, how on earth do you style a white trench coat? And to that we say, no need to fear because we have the answers.

According to THE ICONIC‘s Head of Style, Nicole Adolphe, “trench coats are a great and versatile piece to have in your wardrobe, especially in the cooler months”, she says.

“They can be worn with dresses or pantsuits for an everyday look, or you can throw them over your
athleisure wear to elevate your “running errands” / off-duty model look.”

Monochromatic magic

We love a monochromatic look, and an all-white ensemble is on our must-try list for winter this year. Pair your white trench with shades of white to create a crisp and clean look.

Layer turtlenecks and wide leg pants to stay extra cosy in icy conditions and work in white sneakers or boots to complete the look.

“Shade and texture variation is the key to making a monochromatic look appear chic, and not stark. If your coat is white, ensure that your outfit incorporates some off-white and cream pieces” says Nicole.

Note: avoid coffees, pasta lunches and glasses of red wine on all-white outfit days.

Night and day

If you’re particularly partial to an all black ‘fit – no need to give up on a white trench just yet.

“The classic black and white colour combo will never go out of style. Black bags and sunglasses look great with white coats”, Nicole tells Who.

Use your white trench to add some contrast to an all black look. Pair it with some white accessories like boots, sunglasses or a killer white bag – and you’ll be on the best dressed list for sure.

Keep it casual

Lean into the comfycore aesthetic when it comes to styling your white trench coat.

Instantly elevate your favourite tracksuit set or pair with some leggings, clean sneakers and a chic baseball cap to create an easy-to-wear, comfortable and effortlessly laid back look for running errands or lazy days.

“When it comes to casual outfits, try not to overthink it! A cosy sweatshirt, your favourite jeans or pants and sneakers can be elevated with the simple addition of a neutral-shade trench coat” says Nicole.

Accessorise with bold jewellery to at look like you’re putting a lot of effort in. No one will notice you’re wearing slippers because all eyes will be on that gorgeous coat.

Have fun with it

The great thing about such a classic silhouette and a neutral hue like white, is you can use it as a blank canvas to build any outfit around.

We love the idea of styling a shorter trench as a dress, paired with some bold boots to add some fun to the look.

Otherwise, accentuating with patterns and pops of colour make an eye-catching ensemble for any occasion.

“When styling a white trench coat, the jewellery most visible will be your rings and earrings so feel free to put an emphasis on these accessories”, Nicole advises. “Jewellery on the chunkier side, or a pair of bold, coloured earrings look great in contrast with the cool tone coat.”
