It is one of the most popular diets right now, but the ketogenic diet is not the new kid on the block. It had its first wave of popularity in the 70s when low carbohydrate diets were all the fad.

So what is it?

A ketogenic diet relies on fat as the key source of energy, while severely limiting carbohydrates, and allowing moderate amounts of protein. This forces the body breaks down fat for energy, which leads to a build up of acids called ‘ketones’ in the body. This process is known as ‘ketosis’. The body enters ketosis when carbohydrate intake is reduced to around 50g per day, or less – the equivalent of around two slices of bread, and a banana.

Here are four celebrities who swear by the keto diet.

1\ Halle Berry

Halle Berry credits none other than the keto diet for her rocking bod. Keeping Up With The Kardashians star, Kourtney Kardashian opened up on her app about her experience with the ketogenic diet. “It was a really positive experience for me.” The star has revealed that she has plans to go back on the diet soon.

Second Act star, Vanessa Hudgens is also a fan of the popular diet. She spoke up about her experience on the Rachael Ray Show “I think that we’ve been brainwashed to think that fat is bad, but really, it’s what going to make you feel fuller longer,” she says.

Ada Nicodemou has gone from 52 kilos down to 47 after starting the ketogenic diet and a new workout regimen with celebrity transformation gurus, Chief Brabon and Emilie Brabon-Hames. I wake up in the morning and plan what I’m going to eat.”
