The best Christmas trees across the globe

Go big or go home, right?

From every corner of the globe, here are the cities that do Christmas the best!

Galeries Lafayette Christmas tree, Paris, France

Seven weeks before the big day, American actress Jessica Chastain was given the honour of lighting the 35-metre tree that lies in the heart of Galeries Lafayette’s central court. This year’s theme is green and gold glitter and is sponsored by luxury watchmaker Piaget. Millions have already gathered to admire its beauty, along with the imaginary creatures that hang from the ceiling.

Last year’s theme was ‘Spectacular, Spectacular,’ like the movie, and the tree was created from inflatable candy and doughnuts.

Old Town Square Christmas tree, Prague, Czech Republic

Towering more than 22 metres above Prague’s old city, this year’s Christmas tree— which was transported from the forests of the Liberec region— is arguably the most beautiful yet. Dressed with red and silver baubles, the tree’s lights are switched on every afternoon from 4:30 pm.

Sitting in the centre of the Old Town Square, hundreds of brightly decorated markets are stocked with traditional holiday treats, wooden toys, puppets, embroidered lace and Christmas tree ornaments. Holiday music is played in the evenings to get locals and visitors into the Christmas spirit.

Monte Ingino Christmas tree, Gubbio, Italy

Since 1981, individual pine trees on the slopes of Monte Ingino have been fitted with millions of colourful lights to create one hugely decorated Christmas “tree”. Each year, the festive light installation, which starts from the foot of the mountain and stretches over 2000 feet up the side of it, attracts thousands of tourists.
The medieval town is so famous for its stunning decorations, the Pope was even given the honour of switching on the tree in 2014, done remotely from the Vatican! The illumination can be seen from nearly 50 kilometres away and stays lit until the first week of January.

Rockefeller Center Christmas tree, New York, USA

Celebrating the holidays in the snowy Big Apple is at the top of most people’s bucket list. Each year, 125 million people gather from far and wide to watch the lighting of the world-famous Rockefeller Christmas Tree.

This year’s tree is 22 metres high and weighs in at a whopping 12 tons. And that’s not including the 400-kilogram Swarovski crystal star that sits on top! Bursting with 50,000 multicoloured LED lights, the 72-year-old tree was donated by a generous NYC family and will remain lit and on display until January 7.

For wintertime visitors, ice skating below the tree is a must, as is checking out the jaw-dropping window displays in the cities largest department stores.

Universal Studios Christmas tree, Osaka, Japan

The popular amusement park, Universal Studios Japan takes the holiday season very seriously. For three months of the year, as part of ‘Wonder Christmas,’ the park is filled with festive entertainment, decorations and holiday-themed food trucks that are stocked with local delicacies. This year’s highlights include the Hogwarts Magical Night projection show, the daytime Minions Christmas party parade and the award-winning Christmas show “The Gift of Angels III: The Voice of an Angel.”

But perhaps, the main attraction is the spectacular tree. For the past seven years, the Universal Illusion Tree has held the Guinness World Record for the “World’s Most Illuminated Tree.” This year, the tree has 580, 806 lights which change colour every few days.
