Lizzo also called the dancers from Watch Out for The Big Grrrls on stage with her, many of them representing more diverse body types than have ever been seen on such a massive awards show stage before.
The singer is now halfway to EGOT status, having earned an Emmy and Grammy award, and the significance of it wasn't lost on her.
But as her win was announced and the camera panned to her, Lizzo looked more shocked than anything - and nervous to follow actress Sheryl Lee Ralph's acceptance speech, which earned her a standing ovation.
"Lizzo's reaction after she realized she had to follow Sheryl Lee Ralph's acceptance speech LOL," one fan tweeted alongside screenshots.
Others took to social media to celebrate the star's win, saying it was a massive moment for "fat, Black, beautiful" women like Lizzo everywhere.
"Lizzo really deserved that! I loveeeddddd every minute of her show, it was so uplifting to watch," one wrote.
The show championed diverse body types and self-love, something Lizzo has been vocally championing for years now.
Other fans were more interested in her outfit though, calling the singer one of the best-dressed stars on the night.
Lizzo arrived in a huge tulle gown in a vibrant shade of scarlet, accessorising with strappy heels and minimal jewellery.
She wore her hair in a high bun and went for an understated yet glamorous makeup look.
Fans kept an eye out for her on the red carpet but the star showed up fashionably late and didn't pose for pictures, instead sharing a series of snaps on her Instagram account.
