With four 'bombs' arriving over the first two weeks, wandering eyes has led to a lot of swapping around, because that’s the whole point of Love Island.
Well, “the point” is to “find true love” and win $50,000 - but also, the real point is to couple-swap, look cute on a bean bag chair, drink out of a branded water bottle and ask people if they’re free for a chat.
Tonight, the second round of couples disbanded momentarily, only for some to stay with their existing partners, and for others to re-couple entirely. There was tension, and a whole heap of tears.
The original couples from the fourth episode and bombs were:
- Jess & Taku
- Rachael & Chris
- Tina & Mitch
- Courtney & Ronni
- Lexy & Ryan
- Ari & Aaron
- Emily (bomb)
And the official new five couples of Love Island Australia as of right now are…
JESS & AARON
It took Jess about five seconds to give up on her match with Taku, and with the rest of the girls re-assuring her that it was so fine that she wanted to pursue a connection with Aaron despite telling him she didn't just days before, she flipped like a pancake and ran back to him.
They went so far as to sleep together outside on the daybed, with Jess electing to no longer sleep beside Taku after he was upset by her choice to pursue something with Aaron. Aaron was in a friendship couple with Ari, but seems stoked to back on track with Jess.
RACHAEL & CHRIS
Their connection may be built on both liking one of the most-liked things in the world – Harry Potter – but Rachael and Chris do seem smitten with one another after meeting when he came into the show as a bomb last week.
It was no surprise that he chose to return to a couple with Rachael, despite the pair sharing their first lover's tiff this week. While riding on the 'truth bike' Lexy pondered whether they would make it in the outside world if they were fighting over such small things already. Brutal.
EMILY & MITCH
The tears! After arriving in the villa this week, Emily had first pick at the re-coupling ceremony, meaning she would have to break up an existing couple. She had her eye on Mitch from the very beginning, but his existing connection with Tina made for a very dramatic re-coupling, in which all three shed tears.
While Mitch's feelings for Tina seemed kind of (?) genuine, he had admitted he would be happy to have more time and space to get to know Emily, a comment that he proceeded to lie to Tina about.
Ah, the course of true love never did run smooth.
ARI & RONNI
Cute! These two didn't realise they liked each other, but partnering up for a little dance class this week, we saw things start to change. Ronni was paired with Courtney, and although he felt their connection was strong, he realised he also wanted to see if he had something with Ari.
Ari was in a friendship couple with Aaron, meaning they've both now coupled up with people they actually want to make out with, so hopefully things will get interesting for the both of them!
TINA & TAKU
And Taku once again proves why he's Australia's favourite Islander, opting to save Tina after Emily destroyed her coupling with Mitch. Telling us that he wanted her to have every opportunity to find love while in the villa, he entered into a friendship couple with a very grateful Tina, who is honestly too good for the tears she shed over Mitch anyway.
Taku was previously coupled up with Jess, who quickly got bored of their match and wondered back into Aaron's arms. While it's awesome to see our two faves come together in a power friendship couple, we'd also love to see Tina and Taku find love! Hang in there Tina and Taku!
LEXY & RYAN
To absolutely no one’s surprise, Ryan chose to couple up with Lexy again. The duo have been smitten since her arrival, with their feelings seeming to grow stronger after a night together at 'the hideaway'. Ryan really put in an effort to 'use his words instead of his actions' to tell Lexy how he felt, and she was into it. He also revealed in tonight's episode that he could see them winning the whole show. However, we're hoping these two might slip under the radar for another week because, let's be honest, we're not here for a cute love story, we're here for the gossip.
While this re-coupling should have meant that adorable nursing student Courtney was dumped from the villa, instead Channel Nine pulled a fast one on us - sending in Sophie Monk to save the day. She grabbed Courtney's hand and informed her that Australia had been voting, and that Courtney was one of the most-voted for when it came to the question of who we most want to see find love in the villa. A teary Courtney was saved, however, Sophie did announce that someone would be going home, before leaving us on a massive cliffhanger. NO! Who is going home?
Love Island Australia airs Monday to Thursday, 8:40pm, on Nine and 9Now.
