In yet another royal fashion first, Meghan Markle wore two different earrings to an official engagement in Wales with Prince Harry on Jan. 18 — and the jewellery designers loved it.
“I adore Meghan’s mismatched styling,” says Lisette Polny, founder of Zofia Day, adding: “In fact, it’s something I do personally and suggest to all my clients – it’s very playful!”
In her right ear, Meghan opted for one of Polny’s V-shaped, diamond Dash Ear Studs, while in her left she wore the Yellow Triple Shooting Star Earring from designer Gabriela Artigas. “We offer the options of purchasing earrings as singles,” says Artigas, who notes that she has also sported the look for years: “To embrace your own personal style is a beautiful thing.”
Both designers are California-based, and while Zofia Day has been a go-to jeweller of Meghan’s since she discovered the brand more than two years ago (she wore the $575 earrings at Harry’s Invictus Games last September and also for her Vanity Fair feature), Artigas had no idea that the royal fiancée was a fan of her designs — or that she owned the $350, 14-Karat gold whimsical studs.
It’s in strong contrast to Meghan’s future sister-in-law, Kate Middleton, who favours a more conservative style. “Meghan is a bit more adventurous than Kate, and Meghan has a bit more of a European approach,” fashion expert Hilary Alexander tells PEOPLE.
With everything that Meghan wears selling out almost instantly, will this relaxed vibe be here to stay? “Trends come and go — however, I feel like [the mismatched earring look] will be a new classic staple for the modern woman,” says Artigas, while Polny says it only adds to Meghan’s charm: “I feel it shows that she has a very down-to-earth attitude while still presenting herself with sophistication.”
