Watching Cyrus speak onstage as she accepted her award, Hemsworth laughed at the singer’s jokes, clapped and listened intently as she talked about her passion for making real change in the world. After the event ended, Hemsworth, 26, stood off to the side and gave Cyrus the spotlight while she mingled with guests and posed for photos with fans.
“From challenging stigma around gender and sexuality to fighting for increased access to reproductive health and services to advocating for wildlife policy and reform, Miley uses her … privilege [for those] who don’t have any power at all,” actress Jamie Brewer said while introducing Cyrus to the audience.
Other honorees of the afternoon included Helen Mirren, Scarlett Johansson, Laverne Cox and Ava DuVernay.
“I was overjoyed to not only share today with the brazen women in this room … but feeling just so fortunate,” the “Wrecking Ball” singer said onstage during her speech. After the star hit the stage, she threw Happy Hippie Foundation stickers into the crowd, joking that “it’s like a strip club, but not as fun!”
However, Cyrus ended her speech on a serious note. “To anyone who’s ever felt like they’re different or don’t fit in, I want you to take that as a victory and know you’re not alone. I want to send love into the universe because we desperately need it.”
After calling off their engagement in 2013, Hemsworth and Cyrus rekindled their romance over the holidays in January of this year when they were spotted hanging out at a party in Australia. Since then, Cyrus has been spotted with the ring Hemsworth popped the question with in 2012.
