She added that her last tour – the Dead Petz tour – was more about “having fun,” while her new sound lends to a different concert vibe.
“Growing up in this industry people always assume that I really like attention, but when you’re younger you’re much more fearless,” the 24-year-old said. “As time goes on, I get more and more weird when things are all about me.”
Though Cyrus previously said the song was about her rekindled romance with fiancé Liam Hemsworth, she told Duran it also speaks to self-love.
“I had to really heal myself individually. Then this song about finding a new love with an old love, maybe you’re finding a new freedom,” she said.”[It’s] also about individuality and freedom in that, and realizing that certain doors lead you to one place you never imagined you would be and if that can be through a person, that’s really awesome!”
She also said she hopes the tune helps highlight that both mental and physical health is key in finding happiness. “Even people who don’t agree with me politically or religiously or whatever it is can go, ‘Hey, I want to be more like her,’ and if that just means being a more caring, compassionate person, then I hope that’s the new way to be a role model,” she said.
Cyrus also joked about not yet feeling like a woman, insisting “I’m like a weird freak.”
She said, “Everyone else is like going to sleep with cucumbers on their eyes to go to sleep, and I’m just not like that. I’m pretty gross!”
