Natalie Portman may have won an Oscar for her role in Black Swan alongside Mila Kunis, but the star has opened up about behind-the-scenes shenanigans during the making of the 2010 film.
Speaking to Vogue, Portman revealed director Darren Aronofsky’s attempt at instigating tension between herself and Kunis, close friends for years prior to the project.
“He’d say, ‘Oh, Mila is doing really well on her stuff. She’s so much better than you,’” the actress, 35, told the magazine. “Darren would tell us things about each other to try to make us jealous. I think he was trying to create a rivalry in real life between us.”
Portman and Kunis, 33, played Nina and Lily, two ballet dancers who competed to play the lead role in a production of Swan Lake.
Despite Aronofsky’s behind-the-scenes tactics, Portman told MTV News in 2010 that she and Kunis had forged an even closer relationship after working together.
“Mila and I had ‘sweatpants nights’ watching Top Chef,” she said, “and suddenly we were on set together in tutus, emaciated and tired.”
The two are also connected as Portman played the love interest of Kunis’s husband, Ashton Kutcher, in the 2011 romantic comedy No Strings Attached.
"It's great to see someone do so beautifully in a work context after you know they're just a fun, cool person." she explained to MTV News.
