Former The Bachelor star Brooke Blurton has taken to Instagram to slam the racism she receives from fans.
The proudly Aboriginal reality star revealed that she often receives racist remarks in the guise of compliments.
She captioned one selfie, “Literally frustrates me when I get DMs that say ‘You’re so pretty for an Aboriginal.’”
“You can definitely understand how frustrated I am right now at the fact that people can think they’re ‘complimenting you’, but really, they’re actually disrespecting a whole race,” the soon-to-be Bachelor In Paradise star continued.
It actually frustrates me, and it takes me back to when I was in high school. I continuously got my Aboriginality questioned, not only by my peers or my friends or whoever, I got questioned by teachers, I got questioned by adults, I got questioned by randoms.
“When I would say that I’m Aboriginal, my mum is Aboriginal, they’d be like, ‘Oh, what part?’ or, ‘You’re too pretty to be Aboriginal,’ or, ‘You’re not one of those, are you?’”
“It made me so mad, and I didn’t quite understand it back then because I was so young.” she added.
It actually f*****g confused me, because people questioning your Aboriginality or your cultural identity makes you actually question yourself.”
She adds that she’s always been proud of her Indigenous heritage.
“I was so set on who I am, who my mum was, and who my family were, and these people made me question that,” she said.
“It makes me so mad that this is still happening for me. I f*****g hate that. It actually makes me so f*****g mad and upset, because it’s just ignorance and it’s backwards thinking,” she continued.
